Calbuco is a 2000 meter volcano in Chile which erupted recently. It caused quite a havoc for emergency services in the area. This volcanic eruption has forced the evacuation of nearly 4000 people in the surrouding villages as well as cities. Authorities in Argentina have also warned citizens that volcanic ash may be on the way.

Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt are two cities with a cumulative population of about 250000 citizens that were overlooked by the volcano. The volcano erupted back in 1972 which took all the authorities by surprise. Stratovolcano aka composite volcano such as Calbuco are renowned for containing explosive eruptions. Vesuvius, Krakato and Mt. St. Helens are also stratovolcanoes.

It is about time we turned our attention to the images taken by photographers capturing the scenes. The breathtaking photos of the red lava laced with ash plumes and lightning are quite the sight to behold if you can see past the destruction they cause.
