Medical science has truly advanced of late. Specialists are finding better and safer ways to operate on patients who suffer fatal injuries. Take this 83 year old woman, for instance, who suffered an acute subdural hematoma after she fell head first. Just so that it is clear, subdural hematoma causes blood to accumulate between the brain and the outer covering of the brain. A decade ago, this peculiar case would simply be written off but times have changed.
Dr. Carlos A. Rodrigues Alvarez took over the task of saving this woman’s life. He had to surgically remove a part of the bone in the patient’s skull which made part of her skull accessible to the doctor. To be precise, this is termed, craniotomy. Upon accomplishing this task, he performed what is known as subdural evacuation. This comprised the removal of the blood clot using irrigation. If you think you can handle it, you may have a glimpse of the process in the video. Short note: It is NOT for the weak-hearted.
